For Christmas, Tim's Nonie got the boys the COOLEST gift ever - a butterfly experiment. It is a butterfly habitat, with instructions, and caterpillars that you send away for.
Our larvae/caterpillars arrived on Monday, February 13th. They were so tiny. Within a week they had quadrupled in size and by yesterday they had all formed into chrysalides. The chrysalis stage should last 7-10 days before they hatch into butterflies.
So fun - check it out...

What remains from their first home ... ewww... caterpillar poop and heads.
Apparently they molt their heads off. Who knew?

Carefully transplanted onto the sides of their habitat so they can emerge as butterflies with some space (I couldn't remember how long this took last night and literally had dreams of the poor butterflies emerging into the cup without enough space overnight!). Did the transplant first thing this morning.
Jared counting all ten chrysalides - now the trick will be trying to keep Will from knocking them down before they can complete the transformation!

That is so cool! What a great project. I may look into that for a fun summertime activity! Can you tell me the name of the company?
Hey, did you get my email about the Challenge Charter School tour? I was wondering if I'd see you there. What did you think of the NCS open house?
