If I had to pick a theme for what we are trying to impart to our kids in this season while they are still so young it is that they are "under our authority." They obey us and in doing so, are obeying God. If they disobey us, they are likewise, disobeying God. We try to explain (to Jared at least) that as their parents, we are called to teach them to obey us and God. And, if we fail to do so, then we are disobeying God.We have this conversation often at the Barrett house as we are doing our best to train these precious kids the Lord has entrusted to us.
Tonight, Jared was sent to his room by his Daddy for yet another brother fighting infraction.
When Tim went up to talk to him about it, he explained to Jared that in this instance, he was going to give Jared "mercy" instead of the application of the customary spanking.
Jared got a funny look and replied, "Um, Daddy ... I think you are disobeying God."

He looks like you there! And he does really get it. I'm impressed.
I think he really is getting it. Although, after further thought I had to confirm with Tim that he wasn't "sassing" him with his response.
So glad it was Tim and not me ... Tim was able to explain to him that a Daddy's job is to teach their children the true character of God and that he would be remiss if he didn't teach him about God's mercy, as well.
Pretty sure I wouldn't have said that - think I just would have laughed out loud myself. Holy cow - brave new world once these kids hit three.
