Another First ...

...broken bone that is.

Will fell down the stairs on Wednesday night. Neither Tim or I saw it actually happen. We found him laying on the middle landing in hysterical tears (thank goodness our stairs break in two parts).

When it happened, I had to pull myself out of one of those "I told you so" moments because he was disobeying. He was supposed to be in Jared's room reading a book with his Daddy and yet he was following me. My first reaction when he fell was, "Well... if you had been doing what I told you ..." Tim had to snap me out of it - he realized first that Will really was hurt.

Our dear neighbor (we have the best neighbors), Matt, came over to check him out right away. We literally had to cut Will's pj shirt off because he wouldn't lift his arms. Matt (an ortho pa) didn't see anything visibly wrong and suggested we give it a little time and take him in for an X-ray if he wasn't using his arm.

It was still pretty tender on Thursday and although he was using his arm, he wasn't bearing any weight on it. First thing Friday I booked the appointment at our pediatrician, who zeroed right in on it. Broken clavicle - confirmed later that afternoon by an x-ray.

Luckily, these heal pretty fast - IF you can keep re-injuries from occurring. This is going to be the hard part. Keep a very active 2 year old (with an obviously high tolerance for pain) in a sling?? So far, he's pretty enamored with his sling. The novelty has yet to wear off, so he has been tolerating it pretty well. I've learned now that to keep it from being merely a fashion accessory, I have to hide his bad arm in his shirt, pj's or whatever.

This strategy is working so far...

Any suggestions? I am all ears. ;-)

Will showing his Daddy his new sling and the sticker we decorated it with.

Going for a walk. All zipped up in a hoodie.

This is going to be the tough part ... trying to keep Jared from "helping" too much or being rough with him. These boys love to wrestle. ;-)

Does this count as immobilized? His arm was pretty much completely out of the sling ... we realized this wasn't quite working.

Then we discovered the PJ trick. Consequently, I had him zipped into PJ's for most of the day on Sunday. Removing the temptation ... sure helps me feel better! It was super stressful watching him climb all over stuff and play with both arms!

I have to admit he is pretty cute as a one arm boy ... and getting the hang of doing everything minus one appendage. It hasn't slowed him down too much and he's had a really good attitude about it - for that I am so grateful. Happy boy. ;-)

Oh no! That is pretty cute, though - Will in that tiny sling! Casey just got stitches in his chin - AGAIN! Same spot from when he got stitches just one month ago!
