Good Friday

Good Friday is always a day to remember the sufferings of Jesus on our behalf. We spend a lot of time leading up to Easter and on Good Friday with the boys talking about what happened during Holy Week and what really happened. I am amazed at their ability to grasp the event.

Last year, at 3 Jared was just getting to know Jesus and his miracles when we started really talking about the crucifixion. He was so sad to hear that they killed Jesus. This year, he has started asking a LOT of questions. One thing that really gets him is why Pontius Pilate would condemn Jesus to death even though he didn't want to and in spite of the fact that he didn't do anything wrong. He is really bugged that he gave into the mob. I am grateful to have his eyes to look through. I'm afraid sometimes after reading it so many times I can be desensitized. Jared, on the other hand, is affected by the injustice and the severity of it all. It definitely serves as a reminder to me about what a big deal it really is. I pray we would not gloss over it ...

We went again on Good Friday to the Prayer Garden to walk through the events leading up to Jesus' death on the cross with the boys. The setting is beautiful, it is such a peaceful place (although not quite as peaceful after our arrival - let's face it). I remember Tim and I and our close friends taking the time to all pray together the morning of our wedding day. The garden has sculptured reliefs to illustrate the gospel accounts in three dimensions they can see and also touch. This year, Jared (without any prompting from us) brought his own bible and feverishly tried to find all the different stories in it as we walked through - Jesus praying in the Garden ... the Trial ... the Scourging. It was absolutely precious. The children's bible turned out to be a great tool to have on hand to read to the boys.

This Friday, we went from the garden to church for a Good Friday service. All in all, it was a special day to remember, but a somber one. Am I ever looking forward to Sunday!

On a lighter note, this picture above is of some of the sisters from the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary, the ladies who run the prayer garden (pic not mine). When we got out of the truck to walk through the garden, Will saw one of them and shouted, "LOOK MOMMY! An ANGEL!" and ran straight for her to give her one of his famous tackle hugs. It was pretty sweet, she took to him right away. I have to laugh thinking about the "the look" she gave me as asked, "An angel? What are you teaching him?". I think she thought I was encouraging/deceiving him into thinking she really was an angel. Ha! What can I say? He's two.
