Catechism for YOUNG Children

I have been challenged by that Pamela Benton sermon to teach our children the Catechism for Young Children.  She says we have to teach our kids to think theologically if they are to live practically.  Our older boys are doing great and enjoying it.

Looks like even 16 month old Caleb wants to get in on the party:

We haven't been able to get past Question #1 with Caleb as the answer for everything (so far) apparently is "Gaaaa".  But gosh, isn't he adorable?  :-)

I had a great talk with a couple at our church who have ten grown children and taught most of them the catechism when they were little.  They used M&M's as treats for the memory work and told a few cute stories of how they still think about the catechism questions whenever they see M&M's, ha ha!

So far Jared and Will have memorized the first 10 questions, which are:

1. Q. Who made you? A. God
2. Q.  What else did God make?
A.  God made all things.
3. Q.  Why did God make you and all things?
A.  For His own glory.
4. Q.  How can you glorify God?
A.  By loving Him and doing what He commands.
5. Q.  Why ought you to glorify God?
A.  Because He made me and takes care of me.
6. Q.  Are there more gods than one?
A.  There is only one God.
7. Q.  In how many persons does this one God exist?
A.  In three persons.
8. Q.  What are they?
A.  The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
9. Q.  What is God?
A.  God is a spirit, and has not a body like men.
10. Q. Where is God?
A.  God is everywhere.

There are 145 questions in all that I hope to have each boy memorize by 4th grade.  They get progressively harder and more profound.  All in all they lay a rich and deep foundation.  Tim and I are planning to memorize alongside them as this is not something we learned as kids ourselves.  Wish us luck as our grown up brains aren't quite as quick with this memory work as our kids' are!

PS:  No actual M&M's were used in the making of this video.

We love the Catechism for Young Children. David is working steadily in his book, too. Such a lost discipline in the church today. Glad you are undertaking such an important spiritual step with your boys. Fun to see how the vocabulary enriches their understanding of the simple doctines of our faith. The older kids do it at chuch.

Thanks Christine! I'd love any input or recommendations for tools that you use and love! We ordered the booklet from CEP, which book do you use for David? I ordered "Train Up a Child" by Shirley Windam (another Benton recommendation) from CEP that is supposed to have a great schedule in it for ages 3-18. I'm hoping they can get it and that its not out of print!! This is all new to me, so I would so appreciate any input! PS: I wish you still lived here and we could talk this over in the sunshine with coffee! Post away what you're doing with David so I can see! xoxox
